Here’s my journal, spanning over four decades of coaching. It’s still a work in progress.
Work in progress means my perspective has changed over those decades, and it will likely change again in the future.
This book may seem finished, but the ever-evolving world of performance climbing makes it a moving target. I aim to make coaching accessible and understandable. While I’ll introduce abstract and complex concepts, I’ll also provide evidence of their application. As I compiled this book, I dug up old notes, photos, and ideas from way back when. I revisited physical training and practices related to coaching in its broadest sense. Some made me wonder why I’m doing certain exercises now or using other concepts instead. You might have been coming back from a session and realized you forgot to ask or do something. ‘Argh, I should have remembered the challenge xy!’ The process of putting this book together involved revisiting hours and hours of footage, organizing my notes, but most importantly, reconnect with my ‘Why.’ I always recommend that coaches and athletes find their ‘Why,’ and it really helped me stay focused on my long-term goal of writing this book. Just like coaching, writing this book had its ups and downs. But when you know your ‘Why,’ it’s easier to stay on track and keep going even when things get tough.
It’s tough for any coach to stay on top of things. Helping our athletes reach their full potential might mean we become experts in everything strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, and physiology, without forgetting the psychology part, of course. Being a creative problem solver is a must since we have to adapt to the changing demands of modern climbing competitions for example when it comes to route-setting. There’s always something new to learn in our field.
This book provides a non-linear learning experience, even though it is inherently a linear medium. It includes digital supplements, such as QR codes, interactive apps, or websites that let you explore content in a non-linear, multimedia format. This allows you to explore personalized learning paths based on your interests or needs. You are invited to complete tasks, Climbing Performance Coaching encourages you to reflect, or revisit earlier chapters, creating loops within the book. Open-ended questions or exercises might lead you to revisit earlier sections with a new perspective or skip forward based on your personal insights. So, while the physical form of this book is linear, its design gives you control over your learning journey. This approach caters to diverse learning styles and fosters engagement by allowing for personalization and exploration.
This work in progress means that I’m not presenting a polished and complete “program” here. You might notice differences in my argument throughout the book, depending on the context when I wrote each part. I’m happy to make updates to this book whenever needed and invite you to reach out and let me know if you’d like to see corrections, additions, or improvements and stay tuned about my journey in Climbing Performance Coaching.
I’ll keep all relevant and up-to-date materials so you’re always getting the most current version. This way, I can add information and media not found in already published materials—creating a learning resource that’s tailored to my readers’ and students’ needs.
